The Best iOS Games in 2014

Best iOS Games

Best iOS Games

This is our personal list of top 5 choices for the best iOS games in 2014. Even though most of us prefer to play games on the actual computer (PC or Mac) or on specialized gaming platforms such as the Xbox or Wii, the charm and appeal of mini games for the iPhone shouldn’t be neglected. It’s true that they can’t really provide the gaming experience you can achieve while fully immersed in a complex universe (like our latest crush, Civilization, for example), but there are few better ways to pass the time while you’re stranded in a boring place with only your iPhone or iPad close by.

On the other hand, you shouldn’t assume that such games aren’t complex at all; while that may have been true a few years ago, the mobile device games have evolved considerably lately. There are even multiplayer online strategy games especially designed to be as fun to play with friends as any MMORPG can be. If you’re more of a simplicity fan and you prefer something as basic as Minesweeper, don’t worry: there are plenty of options for you too in the latest iOS game developments. Just make sure you have a good game engine in your device and you’re good to go. Without further ado, this is our list of the 5 categories of best iOS games to play in 2014.

1. Tower defense

We don’t know about you, but few of us here in the Gameguideworld team could say no to a fun round of a good tower defense game every now and then. There are plenty of games in this category, and the type seems to have always been a classic, in the same way a board game is. Our favorite pick here would be the Epic War TD: unlike most, it’s free, it’s still graphically sophisticated, and you can enjoy it in multiplayer mode with your friends as well.

2. A good zombie game

The latest trend when it comes to computer games and to the most recent and best iOS games seems to be the zombie theme. Perhaps it’s due to the fact that zombies are becoming such a popular topic in movies and TV shows as well, perhaps it’s just an updated version of a classic shooter with simply a new kind of target. It doesn’t matter why, but zombie games are now all the rage and every recent one is good enough in this category. Our top pick would be Dead Trigger 2 (also with the advantage of being free), but that’s maybe just our personal preference.

3. Candy Crush and its variations

No, there’s no escaping this game anywhere, and we have to admit we joined the Candy Crush Saga bandwagon. It is one of the best iOS games out there because it’s insanely addictive, hugely popular with all age demographics and both genders, and somehow, the fact that your elderly aunt may be playing this game as we speak is strangely not a put-off.

4. Hearthstone

This is the official iPad spin-off for World of Warcraft and we shouldn’t even say more on the subject. Every game fan in the world is probably a Blizzard fan and we are willing to bet each of them was racing to check out the new iOS Wow spin-off as soon as it was released. After trying it out, all we can say is that our expectations have definitely been met and exceeded.

5. Thomas Was Not Alone

Isn’t this a very intriguing name for a game? We thought so too. Since our other 4 entries are pretty mainstream, we thought we should also feature an indie game as well, and Thomas Was Not Alone was our favorite pick. Although it’s an indie game and it needs to be paid too, it received a lot of attention and positive reviews from critics and consumers alike, and it’s definitely worthy of your attention. All you do in this RPG game is bounce around as a rectangle named Thomas, but with such a brilliant and fun storyline that you won’t mind the graphics, scouts’ honor.

This was our list of the best iOS games to try in 2014. What do you think about our picks? Would you take out or add to our list? Let us know in the comments.

About Andrew Christian

Christian has been gaming ever since his parents bought his first PC. His earliest gaming memory goes back more than 15 years ago, a moment in time that he acknowledges to be the starting point in mastering Street Fighter. As a blogger, he is very enthusiastic about every release he writes about, hoping readers will benefit from his gaming experience. Concerning the games he enjoys playing the most, he looks for good realism more than for special effects. Apart from video games, he loves strategy board games as well, such as Risk, Diplomacy, Game of Thrones and The Settlers of Catan.
