Supergiant Games looks to be off to a good start with the announcement and debut trailer of their new Action RPG Bastion. Trailer inside.
Bastion is an action RPG made by indie developer Supergiant Games. It features high definition graphics as well as dynamic narrator that reacts to the player’s actions and choices.
Overview
The game is set in a destroyed world which has apparent fantasy influences and themes. The game has been described as a Role Playing Action Game. Images have shown there will be a town system, with a blacksmith and library. There also seems to be collectibles that open new areas.
Bastion follows a seemingly silent protagonist referred to as ” The Boy”. The Boy’s story follows his quest to create a safe haven, The Bastion, which his city had decided to go to in case of emergency,
The Bastion
after an event known as the Calamity which split the world into a series of floating islands. This is done by collecting items and assisting survivors. The ground also seems to assemble when the main character walks near it, and fall apart when he moves away from it. Additionally, the player will make the Bastion grow as time goes on and it will offer new services and areas.
The main character will confront a series of gas monsters, such as ” Gasfellas” and ” Scumbags,” some of which appear to be remnants of the old world, while gathering materials such as “somethin’ heavy” or “somethin’ shiny” to create customizable weapons and brew spirits which can be drank to gain new powers.
Bastion’s story will be dynamically generated as the narrator react’s to the player character’s actions in real time. The narrator responds to all of the main characters actions such as when he attacks, counters or finds any item. The narrator will also comment on things happening around the main character such as enemies that appear or important landmarks such as petrified characters that are within the main character’s line of sight. It seems he will also change his comments based on how you handle certain situations, such as if the character stops to examine a scene or how he deals with an enemy.
Gameplay
Bastion follows a more action oriented RPG experience, more so then other action RPG’s like Diablo. The player can perform rolls and attack while on the move, however, attack power is decreased when doing so, and standing still allows the player to deal more powerful and intricate attacks. The player can use numerous weapons from varying time periods, such as a giant hammer, a bow and arrow, and a carbine, additionally, he can equip shields. Each of these is bound to one of the face buttons or triggers. Additionally, the player can reflect projectiles if he times an attack correctly, sending it back to the enemy that fired it.
