Halo: Reach Defiant Map Pack Review Second Look

Prepare to drop with the new Halo: Reach Defiant Map Pack!

Halo: Reach‘s new addition to their Downloadable content library has finally arrived. Bungie’s new Halo: Reach Defiant Map Pack brings more game play for any gamer. Whether you’re a fan of the classic competitive style maps or if your hooked on Firefight mode; this map pack will suit your needs with two very different slayer maps and one addicting Firefight map.

First up in the new Halo: Reach Defiant Map Pack is “Condemned”. This map is located in orbit above a decaying planet Reach. Unlike Anchor 9, the last map to take place in the cold reaches of outer space, this map is quite large, though seems to be close quarters through most of the map. There are a few rooms that open up for more range, which seem to be where battles are meant to take place. One consisting of multiple entry areas and a docked sabre, one of the fighter ships used in the campaign mode of the game. Another room and perhaps my favorite is a low gravity room. This room also has several doorways, and floor levels inside of it. Through out most of the map there are also two floors overlooking each other so you’ll have to watch out in front of you, and above or below you. If you enjoy intense, close range, in-your-face game play than this is the map you’ve been waiting for.

For a more open, longer range type map your going to want to play “Highlands”. This map consists of two almost identical bases where each team spawns initially. These spawn points consist of the same buildings and weapons. It also has a large base area in the center of the two spawn bases, which surrounds and open battlefield, containing rivers and giant rocks. There are teleporters in each base that connects you to the center base, along with a cave system that ties this map together as well. This map also has several vehicles to use as well. I’ve seen screenshots of this map with banshees and wraiths, but in the time that I took playing this map, the only vehicles I came across were mongooses, warthogs, and ghosts. There is a downed pelican in the center of the map too if that counts. So, if sniping people off of a warthog going 40km per hour is your thing, than this map should please your itching trigger finger.

Last but not least, we have the first new Firefight map released since Halo: Reach’s premiere. “Unearthed” is a map located on a mountain side. You spawn inside a bunker with two exits one being directly in front of you, the other being just downstairs. There is a catwalk above most of the ground level in the map, which is sure to give you the upper hand on the onslaught of covenant. The phantoms drop all the usual impending doom, including ghosts and wraiths, with the entire covenant line up, just outside the walls of the this outpost. The ghost can be a hassle, but the wraiths seem to be easily dealt with , because they seem to have trouble actually coming in the base’s outside wall. The weapon drops that everyone loves seem to land at random places just outside the base walls as well. This map is for all the Firefight addicts who can’t get enough. It’s about time we see a new map for this mode.

The Halo: Reach Defiant Map Pack has something for all fans of the Halo series. I haven’t seen anything jaw-dropping in this map pack and I wish it consisted of more maps, but it’s a inexpensive way to add some diversity to your Halo: Reach experience. This map pack is well worth the small amount of money they are asking, and you can expect a little bit of something for everyone, not to mention hours of new game play.
