Devilian Review – Overview, Storyline, Pros, Cons, And More

Devilian review

If you are at a loss as to what game to play next, you are hardly alone. Nowadays, there are so many games on the market that many of us spend more time trying to decide what to play than actually playing. This is especially so with Action Role-Playing Games (ARPGs), a genre that has exploded in recent years.

In this article, we will provide you with an overview of this Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) ARPG, going over everything from its strongest points to its weakest ones. We want our Devilian review to cover all our bases, so we will also compare the game to a few similar titles, including Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited, Dungeon Siege III, and Marvel Heroes. By the end of this comprehensive Devilian review, you will know all the essentials regarding the game and have at least a couple options to consider for your next video game adventure.

What Is Devilian?

We begin our Devilian review with a brief overview of the game. Devilian Online is a Free to Play Action MMORPG with a combat system similar to those of Diablo and Torchlight, two of the genre's most beloved classics.

The game starts you off with a choice between four different character classes. As a Berserker, you can overwhelm hordes of enemies with sheer strength. You can also opt for the Evoker class, which uses a variety of powerful and visually stunning spells to cause widespread destruction. If neither of those characters suit you, there is a third option: the Shadow Hunter, who fights using stealth tactics and blisteringly fast attacks. Finally, you can choose the Cannoneer, a ranged fighter that stands back to charge up explosive attacks.

Each class has three unique subclasses with their own ability trees, offering players tons of skills and character builds to tinker with. Berserkers, for example, can specialize as a Speedblade, a Marauder, or a Spellsword. Cannoneers can become Gunslingers, Demolishers, or Opportunists. Evokers can be Control Evokers, Assault Evokers, or Burst Evokers. Shadowhunters can become Shurken Shadowhunters, Assassination Shadowhunters, or Shadow Shadowhunters.

While the main highlights of Devilian Online are its combat and its character customization, the game also has a rich lore that players gradually discover as they level up, meet new non-playable characters, and explore different locations.

Conclusion: The Results of Our Devilian Review

All in all, if you have played Diablo, Torchlight, or Grim Dawn and liked what you have seen, you will enjoy the many similar elements of Devilian Online and find a number of unique features that will offer you a pleasant surprise.

Next up in our Devilian review is a sneak peek at its main features. Devilian Online has a lot going for it in this regard. The game offers players a choice between four different classes (with a fifth one they can earn later on): the Berserker, the Cannoneer, the Evoker, the Shadowhunter, and the Tempest. Players also get to choose whether they would like to play PvP (Player vs. Player) or PvE (Player vs. Environment).

Devilian Online features a wide array of weapons, armor, and accessories to collect. They can also create items (such as talismans, artifacts, and potions) themselves through a robust crafting system, or earn them through quests and boss battles. Players can even get their own pets, who follow them around and help them get through their battles.

When players complete the game's main path, they have the option to try their luck in more difficult challenges. The game provides optional dungeons with three difficulty modes. They can also simply replay the game and experiment with different classes and builds.

Devilian Online, despite its impressive graphics, is widely accessible in terms of system requirements. Most gamers reading this Devilian review should be able to play it. At the very least, you will need an OS of Windows XP SP3, a CPU of Intel Core 2 Duo P9300 at 2.25Ghz, 2GB of RAM, a GeForce 7800GT video card with DirectX 9.0 or higher, and 20GB of memory. The developers recommend a Windows XP SP3 OS, an Intel Core i3 M 370 CPU at 2.4GHz, 4GB of RAM, a GeForce 9800GT video card with DirectX9.0 or higher, and 20GB of RAM.

Price    $    As Good as it Gets: Free

Devilian Online is free to play on Steam.

Overview:

An Addicting Dungeon Crawling Experience With A lot To Offer

Our Devilian review culminates in an overall rating of 3 stars. The game offers a ton of different dungeons to explore, and throughout them all, you will have plenty of loot to discover and hoard. Devilian is open-handed with its bonus items, which is a breath of fresh air considering the prevalence of Pay to Win online games. With its unique Talisman System, Devilian gives players an unlimited amount of crafting.

Devilian Online has a lot of strengths, but it is ultimately hampered by a restrictive budget, which becomes readily apparent once you get far enough to notice a lot of its designs (especially in equipment) being reused.

Storyline:

Minimal and Shallow Story

Put simply, the game's storyline is far from being the highlight of our Devilian review. For most players, this will not be an issue, as the combat will hold most of their attention.

Graphics:

Beautiful 3D Graphics, Especially Considering the Price

The character designs, as lewd as they are, are easy on the eyes (especially the bosses). The environments are breathtaking. Combat is also a sight to behold as there are countless skills at the player's disposal and they all have unique animations.

Difficulty:

Easy by Default, With Extra Challenges Available

Devilian Online is not a particularly difficult game. For most players, getting through the main storyline will be a breeze. If you are looking for a challenge, though, the game provides opportunities to amp up the difficulty through its special dungeons and PvP battles.

PROS

  • There are many different dungeons to explore
  • The graphics are impressive, especially considering the game is free
  • The Talisman System is unique and gives players tons to tinker with
  • The game is completely free
  • Players can choose between PvP and PvE
  • There are tons of different ability trees for players to mess around with

CONS

  • There is a massive amount of fan service, which may be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your tastes
  • The music is mostly forgettable
  • The story is plain
  • Many equipment designs are reused

The first point of comparison in our Devilian Review is Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited, a similar MMORPG available on PC, the PS4, and the Xbox One.

The game takes place in the fictional land of Tamriel in 2E 582 during the Interregnum, an era between the assassination of the Last Potentate, Savirien-Chorak, and the reign of Tiber Septim. Without a ruler to stabilize the country, it is a chaotic time period characterized by a military conflict called the Alliance War. Three factions, the Aldmeri Dominion, the Daggerfall Covenant, and the Ebonheart Pact, fight for control over the empire. You, the player, must navigate this complex political climate and save the land from destruction.

Combat in Elder Scrolls Online is action-based. Players wage combat through light attacks, heavy attacks, bashes, spells, and abilities. They can also block, dodge, and sneak. Unlike most MMORPGs, there is no auto-attack feature, meaning players must develop their skills and fight using manual controls.

Price    $

Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited is affordable and does not require a subscription like many of its competitors. Among the titles covered by our Devilian review, Elder Scrolls Online is one of the finest options for budget gamers.

Overview:

One of the Best MMORPGs on the Market

Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited is a well-rounded MMORPG with an immense world, a captivating storyline, tons of customization, and beautiful graphics. The combat is fast-paced, with many different builds to experiment with. The music is unforgettable. In addition, the game allows the players to make many meaningful decisions, such as the alliance their character joins to the questlines they decide to take on.

Storyline:

Strong Enough to be a Single Player Game

Unlike most MMORPGs, Elder Scrolls Online has a story that makes a single player run worth the time. The story involves a great deal of political intrigue and has the backing of a rich, fleshed-out lore. Each of the three alliances have unique casts full of fascinating figures to talk to and learn about. The game also has fantastic quests, each with their own stories and themes. Simply put, if you like your games to have well-written stories, Elder Scrolls Online should be at the top of your list.

Graphics:

Not the Game's Strongest Suit, but Strong, All the Same

The graphics are not particularly impressive though they by no means hold the game back.

Difficulty:

Well Balanced

For the most part, Elder Scrolls Online hit the mark when it comes to difficulty. The game is hard enough that players need to think tactically though not so hard that it becomes frustrating.

PROS

  • The storyline is excellent
  • There is a seemingly endless amount of content
  • Combat is challenging and manually controlled
  • There is no required subscription

CONS

  • The game gets boring rather quickly if you do not have people to play it with

Dungeon Siege III is an ARPG available on Xbox 360, PC, and PS3. The game is playable in single player or co-op multiplayer modes. It features a large number of character classes, each with their own ability trees. It also features a high degree of player choice, with decisions that impact the game's story.

Overview:

Short and Somewhat Repetitive

Dungeon Siege III, the second point of comparison in our Devilian review, is a game that struggles to hold its own against many of its ARPG competitors. The game will be fun for anyone who enjoys fast-paced action. The campaign, however, is surprisingly short, and the combat is shallow and repetitive.

Storyline:

Predictable

As fantasy games go, this game's story is mostly cliche and predictable. Most of the characters are simple, boring archetypes.

Graphics:

Easy on the Eyes but Nothing Special

At the time of its release, the game's graphics were above average. A generation later, they still hold up but they are not likely to astound anyone.

Difficulty:

The Clunky AI Makes Combat More Difficult Than it Needs to be

In most aspects, the game's difficulty is fine. Where the game fails is its AI. If you try to get through the game with an AI partner, rather than a real person, you are likely to get frustrated at the illogical decisions he or she will make.

PROS

  • Interesting environments
  • Features a co-op mode

CONS

  • Sloppy AI
  • Predictable story
  • Repetitive combat
  • Short

Marvel Heroes is an online game available on PC and Mac. It features over fifty Marvel heroes, including Iron Man, Thor, Wolverine, Hulk, Spiderman, Captain America, Star Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Emma Frost, and more. You can play the game solo or with your friends.

Price    $$$

The game costs a little high to purchase and has no required subscriptions.

Overview:

A Game Best Avoided

Overall, the game falls short in comparison to the other titles in our Devilian review. While it is always fun to see our favorite heroes team up to save the world, the game's systems are shallow and fail to offer much beyond the 10th hour or so.

Storyline:

A Story Mostly Composed of Fan Service

The story is mainly there because there needs to be one. It is predictable, logically inconsistent, and at times, cringe worthy. There is an overabundance of fan service, which becomes grating after a time.

Graphics:

Easy on the Eyes... When not Buggy

The graphics are fine though it becomes hard to enjoy them when having to grapple with countless visual bugs.

Difficulty:

Too Easy for Most Players

Most players will find the game unchallenging and boring.

PROS

  • The cast is huge
  • The graphics are nice when they are not buggy

CONS

  • The combat is shallow
  • The story is predictable and mostly made up of fan service
  • The game crashes frequently

Conclusion: The Results of Our Devilian Review

After comparing Devilian Online to three similar titles, we decided to award the game a total score of 3 stars. The game is surprisingly complex, especially considering the fact that it is completely free (price rating: $). There are tons of dungeons to explore, countless builds to experiment with, and plenty of loot to collect. The combat, however, can get repetitive quickly, and the overly gratuitous fan service often takes you out of the game.
